Great Wall at Badaling:

The Badaling section of the Great Wall is the best-preserved and the most popular one amongst all the sections. At more than 1,000 meters (3281 ft) above sea level, it commands a strategic position for transportation and defense which was well served in ancient times.

Badaling, literally meaning ¡°reach eight directions¡±, got its name because the maze of its ridges stretches in all directions. It is easily accessible and has easy walking conditions. About 370 state leaders and VIPs (including President Nixon during his landmark visit) have climbed Badaling and admired the magnificence and beauty of its scenery.

Summer Palace:

The Summer Palace, in the Haidian District, northwest of central Beijing, is said to be the best preserved imperial garden in the world, and the largest of its kind still in existence in modern China. It¡¯s hardly surprising that, during the hot Beijing summers, the Imperial Family preferred the beautiful gardens and airy pavilions of the Summer Palace to the walled-in Forbidden City. Dowager Empress Cixi took up permanent residence here for a time, giving rise to some wonderful tales of extravagance and excess.

Although only a short drive (15 km) from central Beijing it seems like another world. The Chinese call it Yihe Yuan (Garden of Restful Peace), and the landscaped gardens, temples and pavilions were designed to achieve harmony with nature, to soothe and please the eye. Small wonder that UNESCO added this 300 hectare site to the World Heritage List in 1998.

Tour Itinerary:
Free hotel pick-up/drop-off and lunch included!

1. You will be picked up from your hotel between 7:30-8am by your English-speaking guide, and we will then proceed to make the 2 hour drive to the Great Wall at Badaling.

2. The Badaling Great Wall is regarded as the wall¡¯s most popular section, and it¡¯s easy to see why, what with the gorgeous vistas it affords and the plentiful watchtowers that dot the hills. Badaling has seen its share of important dignitaries and leaders, as it was the scene of President Nixon¡¯s Great Wall visit during his historic 1972 trip. You will have a couple of hours to explore the wall yourself.

3. After our time on the wall we¡¯ll take a short rest for lunch at the nearby Jindian Restaurant.

4. Following lunch we¡¯ll make the drive back to the northwest of Beijing in order to visit the Summer Palace. This somewhat-modern creation (its been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt over the centuries) is a paradigm of classical Chinese architecture and gardening. It was the scene of much palace intrigue during the fall of China¡¯s last dynasty, the Qing, in the early 20th century. Be sure not to miss the extravagant Marble Boat, built by the Empress Dowager Cixi, which was supposedly so expensive that it bankrupted the Chinese navy! Another highlight is Suzhou Street, a mock-up of the beautiful Chinese river city of Suzhou.

5. By 6:00pm you will be dropped back to your hotel, ending your tour with us.
